Outlaws as lawkeepers: UP cops beat, throw medicos out of train

In yet another act of khaki terror, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) jawans beat up medical students aboard Nauchandi Express at Rampur railway station in Uttar Pradesh. As if that was not enough, these outlawed lawmen also threw several students out of the train.

The students, who were on their way back from Meerut to Allahabad after appearing at the postgraduate medical entrance exams, got into a scuffle with the PAC men, who had forcibly occupied their reserved berths. As the situation worsened, the policemen halted the train and called in about 100 more PAC constables. Then they started assaulting and hammering the students. Five students are also said to be missing since the incident.

According to reports, the junior doctors of Meerut, Allahabad and Gorakhpur have gone on strike and blocked the movement of trains in various parts of the state. Over 22 trains, including Lucknow Mail, Jammu-Tawi Express and Amritsar-Howrah Express, are reported running behind the schedule due to the agitation.

This is not the first incident of policemen taking law in their hands on the tracks; but the railway administration has failed to stop recurrence of such happenings. What’s worse, the railway police prefer to remain mute spectators to these unlawful acts. If law-keepers keep playing havoc with the safety and security of the common people, god alone can save the citizens of this country.
